Hailing from Muskegon Heights, MI, Barnes embarked on a remarkable journey in 1983 when he began his military career after high school. Over 12 transformative years in the Army, he swiftly ascended through the ranks, ultimately teaching Advanced Individual Training (AIT) and the Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC).
This pivotal role not only allowed him to cultivate his leadership capabilities but also to shape future leaders. As the President and CEO of Interpersonal CORE Consulting (ICC), Barnes combines his extensive knowledge with practical experience. His impressive academic credentials include a Bachelor of Arts in Theology, a Bachelor of Science in Human Services (Summa Cum Laude), and a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Columbia International University (CIU). Additionally, he is a Certified Master Mental Health Coach (AACC) for Veterans and First Responders and an ARISE Certified Master Trainer in Life Skills and Practical Living. Barnes is also a Certified Life Coach (CLC) in the following focus areas: Leadership Development, Relationship Building, Veterans and First Responder Trauma-Informed, and Spiritual Growth and Development. Certifications in Multicultural Training, Discipline with Dignity, Conflict Resolution, Effective Communication, Anger Management, and Effective Parenting further amplify his expertise. With over 35 years of experience, he is a respected figure in family and youth professional circles.
Barnes has made significant contributions as a former Program Coordinator for the Academy of Hope at Lee CI in the South Carolina Department of Corrections, where he focused on empowering the top 1% of the most violent leaders through the Violence Interruption leadership model. His background as a Mental Health Officer in a Restricted Housing Unit further underscores his commitment to fostering change. Formerly the Assistant Facility Administrator for the Department of Juvenile Justice (SCDJJ) at JDC Satellite Facility at the BRRC Campus. As an accomplished author, Barnes shares his insights through two influential books: “Crippled, But I’ve Got a Right to Be Here!” “Can’t Go Back, Can’t Stay Here, What’s Up Over There?”, and “There’s a Leader in Me!” His newest book, “There’s a Leader in Me!”, was released in May 2026. Releasing the Leader from within: addresses the leadership paradigm shift taking place in real time in our cities, states, nation, and world. Each of these works confronts the pressing cultural crises of our time while highlighting the leadership necessary to navigate them.
